Buried Bones: The Excavation of an Impact Story
A small glistening in the ground. Something white and worn catches your attention. A fossil. You squat down to brush off more dirt and realize you are going to need a few more tools to uncover this rare relic.
And so the process of storytelling begins.
In his fantastic book, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft, author Stephen King describes the process of writing a story as uncovering a fossil. He explains how they write themselves and simply need the writer to help uncover and grow them.
He writes,
When a writer sits down to begin creating and teasing out a story, the narrative itself is already there waiting to be written. As the story is typed onto a page, the characters take on a life of their own and may surprise even the author whilst he writes them into the existing world.
Like bones lying in the ground, stories are everywhere.
There are the ones we discover in books or hear from friends, or see on silver screens. But there are also the ones which ebb silently and boldly below the surface of the verbal world–the stories we live out everyday by merely getting up in the morning and going about with the day in productive, formed trajectory or in beautiful, necessary meandering. Like the author, we too write these into existence even as they unfold themselves.
These stories are being lived out into creation every second everywhere.
